What Equipment do I need for online lessons?
- A video and audio enabled device with an internet connection (ex. smartphone, laptop, desktop with webcam, tablet)
- A way of stabilizing your device, like a small tripod stand
- Note taking materials
- Internet Connection: Unstable or slow internet connections can cause bad video and audio quality. Wired connections work better than wireless. They are faster and more stable. Plug in when you can.
- comfortable practice space
Expensive sound equipment is not required, I can make recommendations on your room setup to ensure we have the best possible sound with whatever devices you are using.
Optional equipment:- A headset with a microphone, or a USB microphone with a pop filter
- If your goals include learning to read music, or learning to sing and play an instrument at the same time, you’ll want to have a piano, keyboard or guitar easily available.
- A music stand
- Water (recommended!)
- If you need any recommendations or have questions about your set-up please send me an email!
I like to start out by learning a bit about the student by briefly discussing experience, goals and expectations. In the first lesson I will lead you through an assessment of your singing voice. We will discuss my findings and I can give recommendations on how to best proceed with attaining your goals as a vocalist. It helps if students have a song in mind to sing during their first lesson to give me a chance to observe their voice, body and technique. Don’t overthink it, just something that you enjoy singing. What can I expect during my first lesson?
How long will it take for me to become good at singing?
There are no quick fixes or instant paths to success in music without some dedication and lots of practice. I believe that mastering ones voice is a lifelong process and that no one person has all of the answers. I personally have had multiple vocal instructors throughout my career and have learned invaluable tips, tricks and life lessons from each one. My goals as a teacher are to help you learn safe and healthy technique, develop musicianship, as well as to inspire, challenge, encourage and support you throughout your musical journey. That being said, I can say with confidence that if you commit to regular practice, you will begin to see improvements very quickly.
